Anyone know if Homegroup is possible? Apparently it was in the beta’s but did not work.

  • Jasonpax Said on September 3rd, 2009 at 7:56 pm:

The thing missing to make homegroups work is the 2 homegroup services. If someone can figure out how to install those, you should be golden.

what about “the startup sound can’t really work”?

  • Ethan Said on December 10th, 2009 at 9:12 am:

The rest of the Aero features and looks from win 7. Like windows+space making all programs transparent, etc.

Arris: That’s already a feature of Windows Server 2008 R2 after you installed the Desktop Experience feature and enable Aero. See this page for more information.

  • Colin Said on June 2nd, 2010 at 11:53 am:

Great site, thanks for all the help so far.

One BIG one that would be useful for many laptops in Win Server 2008 R2 is Sensor support….

Specifically, my laptop (HP Envy 15) uses an ambient light sensor to automatically adjust backlight based on conditions. Sensor support is included with Win7, but not Server 2008 R2.

  • Maximiliano Said on June 13th, 2010 at 4:09 pm:

Skeltic, i have a External SATA cable in a SATA slot, but it doesn’t have the option of safety remove. Is there any External SATA drivers for 2008R2 avalible? Thanks.

  • Jaswant Singh Rana Said on June 29th, 2010 at 6:53 am:

It would be great if Windows Security Essential can be installed easily without requiring download of Windows SDK.

[...] that will help ya. Yes there are issues as you can find both talked about in that thread and here http://www.win2008r2workstation.com/win2008r2/wish-list There are also various other places that talk about it, but overall I have read that converting it [...]

  • Jave Said on May 26th, 2011 at 3:50 pm:

    maybe an x86 version?

Arris: Hacking together an x86 version of Windows Server 2008 R2 isn’t a good idea I think. :) In that case you could better take a look at Windows Server 2008 R1 or Windows Embedded which is highly customizable. You can find a topic about Windows Embedded here.

  • Sheldon Said on July 22nd, 2011 at 6:27 pm:

WHS 2011′s media player 12 has the streaming menu options missing in other versions of server2008r2, but the link online id function doesn’t work, even though windows live installer updated the live id piece. the link to perform this task doesn’t do anything. Anyone have a workaround?

  • Bayilo Said on August 18th, 2011 at 6:50 pm:

Set up Windows Server 2008 R2 as if it was Microsoft Windows Home Server 2011 (for example make any network computer running with Windows 7 to discover the public “Record TV” folder on Windows Server 2008 R2 as the default folder for storing TV recordings from any network connected Windows 7 computer).

  • David Said on November 23rd, 2011 at 2:58 pm:

    Windows Search feature…

These are the steps to add and enable the Windows Search Service in Windows Server 2008:

    1) Start Server Manager

    2) Click on Roles in the left navigation pane

    3) Select Add Role in the Roles Summary pane to the right

    4) Select the File Services role and click Next

    5) Select the Windows Search role service

Finish the wizard and now you should have the Windows Search service up and running.

Black (Metallic) Theme For Windows Server 2008 R2.

I think it would be nice :)

  • Dan Said on May 10th, 2013 at 7:11 pm:

With WHS 2011 selling for $50, I would like to see a section for that operating system.

I bought it for a budget gaming PC because I dislike giving MS any money at all and it seems to be the cheapest 64 bit option (and with service until 2016 or something).

I’ve heard it is based on 2008 so I’m hoping I will have as much luck with it as you have but I haven’t seen anything that proves or disproves that WHS2011 can be used as a desktop/gaming OS.

I am not planning to use any of the “home server” features of the OS, beside an SSD my storage is going to be offloaded to a NAS, no email servers, no web servers, just games and not much else.
