Windows Search feature...

These are the steps to add and enable the Windows Search Service in Windows Server 2008:

1) Start Server Manager

2) Click on Roles in the left navigation pane

3) Select Add Role in the Roles Summary pane to the right

4) Select the File Services role and click Next

5) Select the Windows Search role service

Finish the wizard and now you should have the Windows Search service up and running.

Set up Windows Server 2008 R2 as if it was Microsoft Windows Home Server 2011 (for example make any network computer running with Windows 7 to discover the public "Record TV" folder on Windows Server 2008 R2 as the default folder for storing TV recordings from any network connected Windows 7 computer).

WHS 2011's media player 12 has the streaming menu options missing in other versions of server2008r2, but the link online id function doesn't work, even though windows live installer updated the live id piece. the link to perform this task doesn't do anything. Anyone have a workaround?

maybe an x86 version?

Arris: Hacking together an x86 version of Windows Server 2008 R2 isn't a good idea I think. :) In that case you could better take a look at Windows Server 2008 R1 or Windows Embedded which is highly customizable. You can find a topic about Windows Embedded here.

It would be great if Windows Security Essential can be installed easily without requiring download of Windows SDK.

Great site, thanks for all the help so far.

One BIG one that would be useful for many laptops in Win Server 2008 R2 is Sensor support....

Specifically, my laptop (HP Envy 15) uses an ambient light sensor to automatically adjust backlight based on conditions. Sensor support is included with Win7, but not Server 2008 R2.
