A lot of us will probably also use Windows Server 2008 R2 to play games! On this page games that work and don’t work are listed. If you have a game that is not listed on this page, please leave a comment and share your experiences. Make sure you have applied all game-related fixes for Windows Server 2008 R2 at step 9 of the manual before reporting a non-working game.

  • Macias Said on September 19th, 2009 at 11:51 am:

I know that most people know that… But want to say it anyway :-) Windows Server isn’t made for playing games :-D I suggest doing a multiboot installation. On “other Windows” the games will work perfect (I advice Win. XP, but I play almoust all my games on Vista now).

  • Macias Said on September 20th, 2009 at 11:42 pm:

I tested NFS Shift (not long) and it should work perfect. I’ll write when I play more and find some “bugs”.

  • Dylan Said on September 22nd, 2009 at 3:21 pm:

TFC may need a DEP exception to run properly — it did in Windows 2008 R1. Many older games need DEP exceptions, so if all else fails, it can’t hurt to try.
(Many people simply disable DEP entirely for everything but the essentials, but I advise against that for security reasons.)
I’ll test whether or not that fixes TFC and post back if that solves it.

  • Simon Said on September 22nd, 2009 at 4:36 pm:

Warhammer Dawn Of War 2 works. By the way: it is a great game !

  • Dylan Said on September 23rd, 2009 at 10:52 pm:

Alright, I got around to shoehorning TFC into working — you need to do one or two things to make it work:

    1. Disable DEP, either for just the hl.exe (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\YourSteamUsername\team fortress classic\hl.exe), this will fix the “screen flash and close” issue.
However, the menu text will probably be invisible, as it was for me.
    2. If the menu text is indeed invisible, then you’ll have to add either “-d3d” or “-software” to the game’s launch options — I recommend the former, though any machine capable of running 2K8R2 is probably powerful enough to use software mode just as well too.
For the Steam version of the game, this is done through Properties > Set launch options; for an old standalone version, that would be done by creating a shortcut to your TFC executable and adding either parameter to the end of the Target: box’s path as found via right click > Properties.

  • Dylan Said on September 23rd, 2009 at 10:53 pm:

Ah, dang. Can’t edit comments. Addendum to #1: Disable DEP for just the executable, or system-wide. Either works, I recommend the former.

I got this free from Dreamspark so I decided to fiddle around with it and got most of the stuff working. However whenever I try and launch any game under Windows 2008 Server R2 it says failed to initialize DirectDraw on every game whether it be a casual game or not. I realize Intel 945g is not meant for hardcore gaming, I am not using it for that purpose. I managed to get the Windows 7 x64 driver to install with this but I get the same results. It seems DirectDraw is hard coded as disabed somewhere, so I am at a loss , and already checked many leads in google to get nothing. Hopefully someone has a solution out there to get me up and running more then I did previously.

  • Karl Said on January 8th, 2010 at 5:14 am:

I’m currently using Windows Server 2008 R2 RC (haven’t gotten around to installing RTM version yet, although I have a key from DreamSpark ready to go). I’ve not had many problems so far, although DiRT doesn’t work properly for me, my specs are as follows:

    * Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 @ 3.7Ghz
    * Nvidia GTX 275
    * 4GB RAM

I think you’ll agree it should work 100% fine. This game was working completely at max settings in Windows 7, but in this OS, it lags along ridiculously. You might want to add it to the non compatible list as it isn’t playable. I have been able to play plenty of other games with no lag and I do NOT have Hyper V installed. I’ve tried compatibility mode, but it still doesn’t want to work properly and no amount of changing settings up or down solves the issue. It even lags at the intro video. Obviously caused by a program issue, rather than a graphics related problem.

  • CedX Said on January 15th, 2010 at 12:07 pm:

“The Saboteur” works fine under Windows Server 2008 R2 (RTM).

The installer puts the game icon into the Game Explorer menu (so it actually never appear in Server 2008, you must create the shortcut manually as no entry is created in Start Menu), but GameUX.dll file isn’t required (no error during installation).

As usual, you must disable Hyper-V to ensure max video performance.

  • CedX Said on January 15th, 2010 at 5:51 pm:

“Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box” also works nicely.

  • Descalzo Said on January 31st, 2010 at 8:22 am:

WarCraft 3 works, as do the expansion and all updates.

    Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory works.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Ultimate Sith Edition works.

All of these worked perfectly well out-of-box, all I had to do was update video drivers. The ones that came with 2008R2 were not very good.

  • RemixedCat Said on February 11th, 2010 at 12:27 am:

use the windows 7 x64 GTX drivers. They should work fine.

Nvidia does not list a server OS for the drivers becuase they do not expect us to use a server OS for gaming. Since R2 is based on 7’s codebase it should be fine. Be sure to use R2 becuase if you use the vista driver it might not have the WDDM update on it. WDDM changed quite a bit in R2. I actually was amazed to see it perform a little faster.

    Good luck ;-)

  • Dave G Said on February 12th, 2010 at 10:49 pm:

    Thanks “Cat” :)

I’ve tried just about everything. It seems there is a conflict between the mb and the graphics card. If I add the card, I see a problem “PCI to PCI-bridge” entry in the device manager. So, basically, the card, or part of it, is only being seen by ‘08r2 as a PCI to PCI bridge. I found a related entry out on the web, but the registry fix that claimed to fix the problem was to a dead link.

I tried updating the driver for the pci to pci bridge entry to the card (a GTX 295) but that hasn’t worked… :(

    Anybody think of anything clever…?

    System is:

Tyan MB with 4 socket, hexa-core CPUs (Nvidia 2200 nForce Pro Chipset)
GTX 295 Video card (THE PROBLEM)
    LSI Raid

Card does not even appear under Display Adapters… When I disable the unused motherboard graphics adapter in BIOS, the “Display Adapters” section goes away altogether under Device Manager.

Everything works except seeing/using the GTX and the only clue is the PCI to PCI bridge entry…

    Arrgg… :)

    Help?

Worms World Party (Team 17) is displayed in wrong colors when started normally on 64bit version.
This issue can be fixed by first killing any explorer process and then running the game. A .BAT file with the following lines in it will do the job and after closing the game, it will automatically restart explorer (if necessary, adjust the path to your WWP directory):

    cd “C:\Team 17\WWP”
    taskkill /IM explorer.exe /F
    start /w wwp.exe
    start explorer

This workaround may work with other games as well. I found it on the internet for some other game (i forgot which one).

[...] All my other applications have worked without a hitch. Firefox, Notepad++, Adboe CS4 Master Collection, MS Office, Daemon Tools…everything works flawlessly. What about games? I play a lot of games, and they have all worked without a hitch on R2. I did have to set MSN to run in Vista compatibility mode to stop it from pinning itself to the tasbar, and go back to the system tray where it belongs. Many games I tried were from a few years ago, as well as the most recent games. Fallout 3, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Aliens Vs Predator(2010), Prototype, Max Payne 2, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Doom 3, Stalker, Soldier of Fortune 2…they all worked perfectly without any intervention needed. Bioshock has been working mostly without a hitch, however I had to install Games for Windows and set it to run in Vista compatibility mode. The only game I absolutely could not get to run at all was Project IGI 2, which ran fine on Vista. I am 99.9% sure however this would not work on Windows 7 either. There is a great list games and they’re known status of working with R2 here. [...]
