To get your joystick, steering wheel or other game controllers working in Windows Server 2008 R2 you must be able to configure them first. To configure them you need the Game Controllers configuration tool in the Control Panel which can be installed in Windows Server 2008 R2 using the following steps.

1. Download gamecontrollers.zip (220KB) from win2008r2workstation.

2. Extract the .zip to a folder and run install(.cmd) to install the Game Controllers Control Panel applet.
Extract gamecontrollers.zip and run install.cmd

3. Open the Control Panel, type controllers in the Search Box in the upper right and click Set up USB game controllers to configure your game controller
Configure your game controllers via the Control Panel

use an Xbox360 wired controller and use XPadder and there you go! You can even map it to use it as a mouse. I use it becuase of a wrist injury and it works great!

U r a God. The one thing left out which would really help, would be to make the Aero animations active, i could manage to enable Aero, but the animations are still missing.

I installed 64bit version of win2008r2, went through the tutorial (which is awesome, thank you for it), and now I figured out that there are messed-up icons in 32bit applications, for example in “save file” dialogs.
All icons of files and directories (even on the left side) are icons of “unknown file”.
It seems that 32bit applications are fully functional, but it is annoying and confusing every time I want to save or open a file with dialog…

    Could you please help me?

you can also integrate the controller into the control panel…

Arris: That’s nice! :) How did you do that?

  • thomas Said on February 13th, 2010 at 1:02 am:

well, it needs some registry settings, obviously.

note that the CLSID can be anything that does not already exist in the registry. but of course it has to be the same in all 7 places below.
also, the path maybe must be adjusted.

someone might test it… and eventually find a better solution.
let me know, if there are problems

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{4299124F-F2C3-41b4-9C73-9236B2AD0E8A}]
    @=”USB Game Controller”
    “System.ControlPanel.Category”=”4″

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{4299124F-F2C3-41b4-9C73-9236B2AD0E8A}\DefaultIcon]
    @=”C:\\Windows\\System32\\joy.cpl”

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{4299124F-F2C3-41b4-9C73-9236B2AD0E8A}\Shell]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{4299124F-F2C3-41b4-9C73-9236B2AD0E8A}\Shell\Open]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{4299124F-F2C3-41b4-9C73-9236B2AD0E8A}\Shell\Open\Command]
    @=”C:\\Windows\\System32\\control.exe joy.cpl”

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace\{4299124F-F2C3-41b4-9C73-9236B2AD0E8A}]
    @=”USB Game Controller”

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\ControlPanelWOW64\NameSpace\{4299124F-F2C3-41b4-9C73-9236B2AD0E8A}]
    @=”USB Game Controller”

Arris: Looks convincing! ;) Thanks for your work :) ; I’ll add it to the installer when I have some time.

Man thanks for this awesome tutorial. I wouldn’t mind hearing how you figured this all out. I know it must have taken quite a bit of your time.

    Again, Thanks!
