By default Windows Server 2008 has the plain white mouse pointer. In this tutorial we will install the Aero cursors of Windows 7.

1. Download aero_cursors.zip (398KB) from win2008r2workstation.

2. After downloading the zip extract the zip, run install.cmd as an Administrator and follow the instructions on the screen.
Aero cursors installation

3. To start using the Aero cursors go to the Start menu and click Control Panel.
- If you are using the Category View, click Mouse in the Hardware section.
- If you are using the Classic View, click the Mouse icon.
In the Mouse Properties window click tab Pointers, select Windows Aero from the Scheme dropdown list. Optionally you can also check the Enable pointer shadow. Click OK or Apply to start using the Aero cursors.

Set your Cursor Scheme to Windows Aero

4. Optional: If you want to set the Aero cursors as the default cursors scheme, import the file default_aero_cursors.reg to the registry.

Enjoy the smooth looking mouse pointers and cursor animations! ;-)

Anyone else having trouble getting the cursor pack (or the sidebar from the previous page) to install properly? I try running as admin and keep getting an error:

    File Not Found — Cursors
    Installation Failed! …

    Thanks in advance!

Arris: Try copying the files manually to %SystemRoot%Cursors and importing aero_schemes.reg.

All Perfect. Many thanks for this script.

    Now I have my Aero-Styled-Cursors back under R2 :-) )))))

The last one what I have to do now is to apply the blue startscreen. I don’t like it in grey ;-)

There is something wrong with the registry file.

It sets the Windows Aero string as
    C:WindowsCursorsaero_arrow.cur,C:WindowsCursorsaero_helpsel.cur,C:WindowsCursorsaero_working.ani,C:WindowsCursorsaero_busy.ani,C:WindowsCursorscross_r.cur,C:WindowsCursorsaero_pen.cur,C:WindowsCursorsaero_unavail.cur,C:WindowsCursorsaero_ns.cur,C:WindowsCursorsaero_ew.cur,C:WindowsCursorsaero_nwse.cur,C:WindowsCursorsaero_nesw.cur,C:WindowsCursorsaero_move.cur,C:WindowsCursorsaero_up.cur,C:WindowsCursorsaero_link.cur

    while it should be
    C:WindowsCursorsaero_arrow.cur,C:WindowsCursorsaero_helpsel.cur,C:WindowsCursorsaero_working.ani,C:WindowsCursorsaero_busy.ani,C:WindowsCursorscross_r.cur,,C:WindowsCursorsaero_pen.cur,C:WindowsCursorsaero_unavail.cur,C:WindowsCursorsaero_ns.cur,C:WindowsCursorsaero_ew.cur,C:WindowsCursorsaero_nwse.cur,C:WindowsCursorsaero_nesw.cur,C:WindowsCursorsaero_move.cur,C:WindowsCursorsaero_up.cur,C:WindowsCursorsaero_link.cur

By missing one comma, the cursor in the Aero scheme was off by one, with the handwriting cursor taking over the text cursor, and so on.

Only the regular Aero is incorrect; Lare and Extra Large didn’t have any problem.
